Billy Liar

Filed under: comedy, romance, 1-star films

A load of rubbish about an irritating idiot. He’s not charming. He’s a slacker who does stupid things for no discernable reason, and lives out his life in a fantasy world. I have no time for watching men behave like the boys they should have grown out of years before. Supposedly a comedy, but our lounge was decidedly un-ringing with guffaws as we watched this.

  1. Actually, I rather like this melancholy and well-acted film. Its a typical “angry young man” British film from the 1960s, along similar lines to This Sporting Life, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, A Taste of Honey and others. Julie Christy and Tom Courtenay are both fantastic. Admittedly, its very much a product of its time.

  2. Well, not having seen these other movies referenced by simon, I can’t comment - but I hope they’re better than Billy Liar.

  3. Oh I am so glad there are others who just found this an indulgent load of crap. Painful to watch till the end - would not do it again.
